About Me
Law graduate, coder, and former coach. I'm just trying to make legal work a little less painful.
Hey!
I'm James Gosnell, a 22-year-old from Montreal. I recently completed law school and am now preparing for the Bar.
I built this site as a way to keep myself honest while I study. I'm writing through the Bar materials as I work through them because I've always found that the best way to understand something properly is to explain it clearly. Coaching taught me that lesson early, and it continues to shape how I learn and how I work.
I have a law degree and a DEC in Pure and Applied Science, though much of what has shaped me most came from outside the classroom. Coaching, entrepreneurship, and building practical things have taught me as much as any formal training.
I'm drawn to the parts of law that reward precision, judgment, and clarity. I'm also deeply interested in how technology can make legal work more efficient and more usable in practice. Alongside Bar prep, I spend a great deal of time thinking about legal systems, document workflows, and tools that make complex material easier to work with.
At the moment, I'm focused on both Quebec civil law and Alberta common law. This site is part study tool, and part exhibition of my projects.
When I'm not studying, writing, or building, you'll probably find me skiing, sailing, or cycling around Montreal or Banff, where I split my time.
